Madeira is a place where Europe meets the tropics - an enchanting island of breathtaking views.

Madeira is a volcanic island with steep cliffs falling down to the sea. The closest to a Mediterranean-style beach is probably Ribeira Brava and there's a man-made stretch of golden sand at Calheta. The nearest beach to Funchal is Praia Formosa.

Funchal is a unique town, almost every street uncovers another fascinating sight or historic gem. Wander the old town with its quaint cobblestones, craft shops and pavement cafes. Or visit the marina with its fine seafood restaurants before admiring the city's impressive Se cathedral with its ornate ceiling and artworks. The coastline is rocky and Funchal makes up for it with a seafront lido. Or take a day trip out to the tiny island of Porto Santo, three hours by ferry from Funchal
