The Costa de Prata, known as the Silver Coast, is the coast of
the Beira Litoral lying between Lisbon and Oporto and has
long, sandy, exposed and windswept beaches making it
attractive to windsurfers.
There are many beautiful
towns and villages inland. Fatima, a place of religious
worship, is about 120kms north of Lisbon and is named after an
Arab girl captured by a Christian and brought back to live in
the area. Fatima is now a point of pilgrimage for Roman
Catholics due to the vision of the Virgin Mary by three young
children in 1917 while tending their flock. Today, on May 13
and October 13, thousands of pilgrims make their way from all
over the world to celebrate the vision.
Aveiro is famous for its
lagoon. The town is criss-crossed by canals where colourfully
painted boats sail. Castelo Branco - White Castle - sits on
the slope of a hill that dominates a plateau giving a
panoramic view that stretches to the frontier. The city´s main
attraction is the amazing Jardim do Paço or Bishop´s Palace
gardens.
